What Is School-Based ABA Therapy?

School-based Applied Behavior Analysis brings ABA support into your child's educational environment. Instead of practicing every skill somewhere separate from school, treatment can address individualized goals during naturally occurring situations such as classroom activities, transitions, lunch, play, group activities, and interactions with peers and teachers.

Depending on your child's assessment and treatment plan, school-based ABA may address:

The goal isn't to make every child behave the same way. Treatment focuses on individualized, meaningful skills that support your child's participation and independence.

Why Provide ABA Therapy at School?

A child may successfully demonstrate a skill at home or during a structured therapy session but have difficulty using that same skill in a busy classroom. School creates different demands, distractions, routines, and social situations.

What Does School-Based ABA Look Like?

School-based ABA should not mean an RBT simply follows a child around all day. Services are guided by an individualized treatment plan and specific clinical goals.
Depending on your child's needs, a session might include support during:

Classroom Routines: Practicing skills related to participating in classroom activities and navigating established routines.
Transitions: Working on moving between activities, classrooms, or other parts of the school day.
Communication: Developing effective ways to request help, communicate needs, make choices, or interact with others.
Peer Interaction: Practicing individualized social and play skills during naturally occurring opportunities.
Independent Activities: Building skills that allow the child to participate with increasing independence when appropriate.
Lunch, Recess & Group Activities: Using less structured parts of the school day as opportunities to practice individualized communication, social, safety, or independence goals.

Your Child's School-Based ABA Team

Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA)

The BCBA develops and oversees the child's ABA treatment plan, analyzes progress, adjusts clinical strategies when necessary, and provides supervision.

Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)

An RBT will provide direct ABA services at school under BCBA supervision, implementing interventions and collecting data according to the treatment plan.

Treatment decisions are informed by data, clinical observation, and your child's progress.

Insurance coverage for ABA varies depending on the individual plan, eligibility, diagnosis, medical necessity, benefits, and authorization requirements.
